Under previous employment, Fulkers Bailey Russell worked on the consolidation of two campuses into one over a three-year period. Part of the consolidation was this scheme, which comprises five new buildings providing accommodation for 250 students over three construction periods.

It was split into approximately two one-hundred beds and one fifty-bed phase. The scheme was sensitively sited in relation to the existing 1960’s buildings. It also formed an attractive landscaped access route.

Residential blocks received an exposed concrete finish to the walls and ceilings in multiple areas. This was due to the tunnel form construction to reduce the programme, keep capital and maintenance costs down as well as the design choice. Although it was considered to be a strong solution, the entire team needed to understand and agree the classification of the concrete finish.

The accommodation blocks went on to win the Civic Trust Awards.
